Sierra
Vista,
is the major population center for the southeastern Arizona
area. The city is located approximately 70 miles southeast of
Tucson and is easily accessible off Interstate 10. Sierra Vista
serves as the main commercial, cultural and recreational hub
of the area. Sierra Vista's abundant sunshine, high altitude
(elevation at 4,623 feet), and clean fresh air adds to the city's
livability and comfort.
Where
some of the most advanced technologies of today
are being developed.
The
picturesque setting among the Huachuca, Dragoon, Mule and Whetstone
Mountains emphasizes Sierra Vista's Spanish name meaning mountain
view. Nature lovers will relish in the variety of adventures
and activities found in the spectacular mountains and vast,
high desert valleys around Sierra Vista. Because of the proliferation
of winged species, Sierra Vista has earned the distinction as
the "Hummingbird Capital of the U.S." Prime bird watching
opportunities can be found along the San Pedro River, at the
Nature Conservancy's
Ramsey
Canyon Preserve and in Fort Huachuca's Garden Canyon. Unsurpassed
views of the starry night sky have led Sierra Vista to become
the chosen center of amateur astronomy in Arizona with more
than a dozen well equipped amateur observatories in the area
and a world class university observatory within the city limits.
Residents enjoy a variety of
attractions within a one-hour drive from Sierra Vista to include;
Tombstone "The Town Too Tough to Die," Bisbee the
picturesque 1900's mountain-side mining town, Kartchner Caverns
the only known "living" cave in Arizona and numerous
historical sites and national parks. Situated within the Sierra
Vista community is Fort Huachuca, home of the US Army Intelligence
Center & School and the Army Signal Command.

Major
Organizations and Activities
U.S.
Army Garrison
The
U.S. Army garrison manages the multitude of functions and services
that keep the 73,000-acre installation operating so that other
organizations on post may concentrate on their primary missions.
The 306th
Military Intelligence Battalion, located in Riley Barracks,
provides support to the Garrison. The 306th exercises battalion-level
command over four companies including the 36th Army band and
the Ceremonial Detachment.
As
a city unto itself, the Garrison provides support to Fort Huachuca
just as any city government supports its community. For instance,
the Garrison provides such services as Military and civilian
personnel, legal, inspector general, logistical, facilities
engineering, fire and safety, intelligence and security, housing,
public affairs, resource management, internal audit compliance
review and crime prevention/law enforcement. The garrison also
maintains community facilities and provides necessary services
for religious, health, welfare and entertainment activities.
The Garrison is responsible for maintaining Fort Huachuca’s
quality of life.
Because
Fort Huachuca is the largest and primary Army installation in
Arizona, the Garrison supports the Army Reserve and Army National
Guard, as well as a number of other military activities throughout
the state.
