US Army Garrison (Fort Huachuca)

History:

Historic Fort Huachuca was declared a national landmark in 1976 and has had a significant presence in Sierra Vista for many years. In 1877 Colonel August B. Kautz, commander of the Department of Arizona, ordered that a camp be established in the Huachuca Mountains to protect southern Arizona against the Chiricahua Apaches, led by Geronimo. This camp would offer protection to settlers and travel routes in southeastern Arizona while simultaneously blocking the traditional Apache escape routes through the San Pedro and Santa Cruz valleys. Fort Huachuca was also the headquarters of the famed 10th Cavalry, the "Buffalo Soldiers," one of the Army's elite black cavalry corps.

Impact:

Fort Huachuca is the world’s largest Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) training facility, home of the US Army Intelligence Center and is Southern Arizona’s 4th largest employer; providing jobs to over 17,000 individuals. The military and Department of Defense (DoD) have a substantial impact on the local economy; being one of the largest components of labor force. Several major commands now operate on Fort Huachuca, including the Army Intelligence Center and School, the U.S. Army Network Enterprise Technology Command/9th Army Signal Command, Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) and the Electronic Proving Grounds.

Fort Huachuca's Mission is to provide equitable, effective, and efficient management of Fort Huachuca to support mission readiness and execution; enable the well-being of soldiers, civilians, and family members; and to preserve our environment.
